Check your vehicle's manual to determine the correct type and size of battery to purchase. Alternatively, most technicians at larger auto parts stores can pull up the requirements for your vehicle on their computers to help you make this purchase. 2 Determine how to open your remote keyless entry car key. Different keys require different opening methods. One method involves grabbing the sides of the key and lightly pulling until the key separates into two pieces. Another method involves locating and pressing a release tab that opens the back panel on the key. A third method involves using a small Phillips screwdriver to remove the small screws holding the two key panels together. 3 Find the battery located in the interior area of the key. The battery is small, round and metallic in appearance. 4 Remove the battery. 5 Place the new battery inside the battery slot. Make sure that the plus side of the battery is facing out. 6 Replace the outer panel of the key. Make sure the panel is replaced properly to ensure the battery is secure. Use the method you followed in Step 2 to open your remote keyless entry car key, but in reverse. 7 Test the new remote keyless entry car key battery to ensure that it functions properly. It is bolted to the frame or side of the engine block. Disconnect and remove the cable and clean the contacting surface and bolt with the wire brush and rag. 6 Follow the red cable to the other end where it will be connected to the starter. The starter is generally located on the lower left or right side of the engine block. Loosen and remove the nut holding the cable to starter. Remove the red cable and clean the contact post with the wire brush and rag. 7 Install the new red positive cable onto the starter and tighten. Tuck the battery end out of the way until later. 8 Install the new black negative cable to the engine block or frame. Bolt the ground neutral wire back to the fender or radiator mount. 9 Connect the new red positive "+" cable to the positive "+" terminal on the battery. Step by Step : 10 Connect the new black negative "-" cable to the negative "-" terminal on the battery. Spray the terminals with anti-corrosion spray. Tips & Warnings Inspect and clean the battery and tray while carrying out the cables procedure.
